What is "kakishibuzome"?
"Kakishibuzome" is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that utilizes tannin extracted from persimmon fruit. This method typically employs a specific type of persimmon known as "shibu-gaki," which is high in tannin and not usually consumed as a fruit. The process begins with the harvesting of green, unripe persimmons before they ripen to orange. These persimmons are then crushed and pressed to extract the juice, which is stored and fermented for over a year to produce persimmon tannin, known as "kakishibu."
The history of kakishibuzome is ancient, with garments dyed using persimmon tannin, known as "kakiso," dating back over a thousand years.
One of the unique characteristics of items dyed with persimmon tannin is that their color deepens and transforms into a rich amber hue with use.
In modern times, kakishibuzome has regained attention as an environmentally friendly dyeing method that avoids the use of chemical substances.
Benefits of Kakishibuzome
- Strengthens materials: Provides robustness to the dyed items.
- Waterproof, preservative, and insect-repellent: Offers natural protection against water, decay, and insects.
- Enhances color over time: The color intensifies and develops into a richer hue with daily use.
- Environmentally friendly: Made from natural materials, making it a sustainable and eco-friendly dye.
