What is WASHIKA

WASHIKA is a brand born from a company that makes leather bags. Wanting to create bags that feel more comfortable and blend naturally into everyday life, we turned to our materials and to Japanese craftsmanship.

Washi and leather. By combining these different materials and drawing out the qualities of each, we give them form as a bag. From choosing the materials to the final finishing. A new option, born from the perspective of a bag maker.

Washi from Mino

Handmade washi from Mino, with a history of more than 1,300 years. In Mino, papermaking has been passed down for over 1,300 years. In a land blessed with abundant water and nature, artisans still make each sheet by hand. The way the fibers settle, the creases, the color. Because it is made by hand, every sheet has its own expression. WASHIKA brings this washi, with all its individual character, into its bags as a material.

本革

本革Genuine Leather

Texture and presence that only genuine leather can bring. WASHIKA bags are made with genuine leather. Each hide has its own look, and its texture and softness vary from piece to piece. Making the most of that natural character and pairing it with washi, we create bags that bring out the appeal of each material. Washi and leather. A presence unique to WASHIKA, born from combining two different materials.

Konjac Treatment

One extra step for the washi. The washi used in WASHIKA bags is treated with konjac. By layering a konjac-derived coating onto its surface, we prepare the washi so it can be handled as a bag material. It is one of the methods long used in treating washi. Rooted in traditional craftsmanship, it carries washi into bags for today.

Applied to thick, reinforced washi, this treatment makes it resistant to pulling and abrasion. Unless it meets sharp objects or excessive force, it will not tear or wear through in everyday use. It also keeps water from soaking in right away. It is not fully waterproof, but even when wet it keeps its strength and shape, and returns to its original state when left to dry naturally.

Kakishibu Treatment

The color of kakishibu, created over time. Some WASHIKA bags use washi treated with kakishibu, a persimmon tannin. Kakishibu has long been used in Japanese daily life and craftsmanship. It is made from persimmons that are still green. The harvested persimmons are pressed, and the juice is fermented and aged over time to become kakishibu. From harvest to processing and aging, it is not made quickly. It is a material born from effort and time. Bringing kakishibu into washi creates a calm, deep color and a character all its own.

The Stitching Process

Turning materials into a bag. WASHIKA bags are not simply a combination of materials. We make them with ease of use and overall presence in mind. Washi and leather differ in thickness, texture, and the way they must be handled. With a close understanding of these qualities, we carry out the cutting, the stitching, and the assembly of each part. Drawing on the sewing experience we have built up over the years, we bring different materials together into a single bag. Making the most of each material, shaped into a bag for everyday use. That is the craftsmanship of WASHIKA, a brand born from a bag-making company.
